Mayan RuinsIt is one of the few Mayan sites which the original Mayan name is known and used. It is the best known of all the Mayan cities covering over a six square mile area. The large pyramid at Chichen Itza, El Castillo, was named by Bishop Landa. It was originally dedicated to the feathered serpent , Kukulcán. The pyramid is believed to be built around 850 AD. There are 91 steps on all four sides plus one on the top totaling 365. El Castillo is believed to be a large solar calendar. The pyramid is a step pyramid, with nine large tiers to the top.
